Ryanair passengers boost economy

More than one million passengers travelled through Prestwick in a year
Ryanair flights generated �26m for the economy in Ayrshire, according to a study by Scottish Enterprise.

Over a million passengers travelled through Prestwick Airport on Ryanair's 17 routes in the year to October 2005.

The report also found the budget airline supports between 385 and 542 jobs in the Ayrshire area.

Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire said Ryanair flights generated �140m for the Scottish economy over with inbound passengers spending an average of �300.

Evelyn McCann, chief executive, said: "This report is great news for Ayrshire and it clearly underlines the importance of Prestwick as a key gateway to Ayrshire and the rest of Scotland for tourists from across the globe."

Ryanair's head of communications, Peter Sherrard, said: "Year-round international flights are vital for tourism and business in Ayrshire and Scotland as a whole."

The figures are based on passenger interviews between November 2004 and October 2005.

Brian Donohoe, MP for Central Ayrshire, said: "Tourism is very important to the economy of Ayrshire and it is clear from this report that Ryanair is an extremely important source to the local economy."
