Senior politicians have launched a campaign urging a rethink over Paisley University's plans to drop the town's name from its title. The Keep It Paisley Campaign supporters include Secretary of State for Scotland Douglas Alexander.
The town's name has been part of the university's identity for over a century. It plans to rebrand itself as the University of the West of Scotland.
Hugh Henry, Paisley South MSP, said the new name "doesn't mean anything".
He said: "It is as if the university is turning its back on the town that gave it birth."
The University of Paisley stressed the name change would only happen as part of a proposed merger, which would mean it had sites in Lanarkshire and Dumfries and Galloway as well as Paisley.
"This will mean that the institution will serve a significant percentage of the population of the west of Scotland," a University of Paisley spokesperson said.
"We believe that merger and the associated name change, are a positive step for the university and for the communities that it serves."
