AC Milan open a base in Paisley

An unlikely partnership between Italian football giants AC Milan and a Scottish university has been unveiled.

The reigning Serie A champions are establishing a sports academy at Paisley University's Robertson Trust Sports Centre in Renfrewshire.

Milan will base a number of their coaches at the university and operate junior camps.

A university spokesman said: "To be the only venue in Scotland to be hosting these camps is a huge achievement."

Milan's junior camps will provide the opportunity for boys aged between five to 18 to receive world-class training and coaching.

It is hoped the scheme can pave the way for a young Scot to emulate legendary Scotland striker Joe Jordan, who played for Milan between 1981 and 1984.

The plans were unveiled by Michele Ferraris, director of the club's youth programme.

Milan's initiative will get underway this summer, with two week-long residential football camps, between July 11-16 and July 18-23.

The number of places will be limited to 100 participants per camp.

"This partnership with AC Milan highlights the quality of the University's Robertson Trust Sports Centre," said the university spokesman.

The nearest Scottish club to the university are St Mirren, who are currently third in the First Division.
