Meadowbank Stadium will receive ongoing maintenance |
A major refurbishment of an Edinburgh stadium is set to be put on hold to make way for a 37m revamp of the Royal Commonwealth Pool. It is understood a report on the city's sport facilities next week will recommend a revamp of Meadowbank Stadium be shelved.
Councillors will consider the report by Tom Aitchison, Edinburgh City Council's chief executive, next Thursday.
Campaigners who fought to save the stadium called for refurbishment money.
Meadowbank Stadium will receive ongoing maintenance in the meantime.
The move follows calls back in August from councillors for a report into the city's sports facilities.
It is understood city officials want to focus on the pool ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Councillors are also expected to recommend some land at the Meadowbank site is sold.
'Limited resources'
Steve Cardownie, deputy council leader, said: "It's perfectly evident that both facilities are in dire need of investment.
"We are happy to take on the previous Labour administration's commitment to provide diving facilities for the Commonwealth Games.
"That means a total refurbishment of the Royal Commonwealth Pool - not just the diving facilities.
"Because of that, and our limited resources, there will need to be a further report on Meadowbank."
Bill Walker, a sports coach and spokesman for the Save Meadowbank campaign, said: "We're still looking for a knight in shining armour to provide the money for a refurbishment.
"I think the council is in a difficult situation money-wise."
