Taxi marshals 'to improve safety'
Revellers in Edinburgh
The schemes aims to improve the safety of light-night revellers
Marshals are to patrol taxi ranks in Edinburgh over the festive period to help late-night revellers get home.

The trial project, at Waverley Bridge, Lothian Road and the Caledonian Hotel, also aims to ensure people have a safe place to wait for taxis.

Marshals will be on duty on Friday and Saturday nights from 2230 to 0400 GMT during December, and on the last two Thursday evenings before Christmas.

If successful, the scheme may become a permanent fixture in the city centre.

Councillor Sheila Gilmore said: "At this time of year the town is particularly busy and travelling home safely at the end of a night out can be a worry.

"So it's a good time to trial this new service which will help ensure that the end of a night out is as good as the rest of the evening has been."

Marshals are also to distribute information about night buses and private hire cars, to ensure members of the public are aware of all alternative routes home.

Edinburgh City Centre Management Company (ECCM) is leading the project with help from the Edinburgh Community Safety Partnership and Lothian and Borders Police.

Similar projects operate in other cities in Scotland and south of the border.
