| Sunday, 16 February, 2003, 01:38 GMT Schools ration junk food ![]() Two meals a week can contain chips or roast potatoes School canteens are to ration junk food in an attempt to make pupils lose weight. The Scottish Executive is to announce plans to give local authorities extra cash to spend on ridding school dinners of fattening foods. Schools must serve pasta and rice at least once every week to qualify. Primary schools will be banned from serving burgers and hot dogs for more than one meal a week.
While just two meals a week can contain chips, roast potatoes or waffles. Every school lunch must include two portions of fruit and vegetables and one piece of meat or fish. Chilled water and milk must also be made available. But fizzy drinks and chocolate are banned. Children will also be told to eat bread every lunchtime. Although garlic bread must not be served more than twice during any school week. Education Minister Cathy Jamieson said a healthy diet was "vital to developing healthy minds".
