Doctors in Scotland want the drink driving limit to be almost halved to make a significant reduction on the number of road deaths.

The proposal is contained in an election manifesto produced by the British Medical Association in Scotland.

The document, "Priorities for Health", will be sent to each candidates ahead of the Scottish Parliament elections in May.

Another action call is for smoking to be banned in public places such as pubs because voluntary agreements are insufficient to protect non-smokers' health.

The cut from 80 milligrammes to 50 would mean motorists only being able to consume about half a pint of lager before being on or over the limit.

Devolution issue

Dr Bill O'Neill, president of the BMA in Scotland, admitted a lower limit north of the border only would prove difficult to operate.

But he said the parliament could put pressure on Westminster to back a UK-wide move to reduce the threshold.

The association also wants more action on drug-related road accidents.

The manifesto also seeks better integrated services and more flexible working arrangements for medical staff.
