| Monday, 31 December, 2001, 13:19 GMT Slight drop in drink drive figures ![]() Less motorists tested positive for alcohol this festive period The number of Scottish motorists caught drink driving during the festive period has decreased slightly. Since the annual campaign began three weeks ago there have been 166 positive breath tests given at roadside accidents compared to 171 last year - a decrease of 3%. The figures for speeding are also slightly down but the number of people found not wearing a seat belt is up by almost one quarter to nearly 8,000. Police said it was "disheartening" that so many people had given positive breath tests over the festive period.
His 51-year-old wife visited the local police office to enquire about him but was later arrested herself after providing a positive breath test. In another incident in West Lothian, a 32-year-old woman was stopped in East Calder on Christmas Eve following a report of a crash on the A71. She was arrested after giving a positive breath test three times over the legal limit. The Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPOS) said it was "disappointed" at the latest figures. Advice ignored Superintendent Colin McNeill, said: "Whilst the current figure is slightly down on last year it is still disheartening to see that 166 motorists have given positive breath tests at the scene of road collisions. "This is despite police and motoring organisations highlighting the dangers of drinking and driving - advice which is being ignored. "No-one should forget that drinking and driving costs lives - it is as simple as that. "This time of year is traditionally one for celebration and not for mourning the loss of a loved one killed by a drink driver. "We would urge motorists not to get behind the wheel if they have been drinking and ensure that more lives are not lost this festive season." | See also: Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
