| Monday, 12 August, 2002, 10:37 GMT 11:37 UK MSPs get tourism 'work experience' ![]() Tourism is vital to Scotland's economy MSPs are to be sent on four-day long "work experience" placements to give them a better understanding of the tourism industry. The Scottish Parliament scheme was launched on Monday, and the Scottish National Party's Michael Matheson was first to get involved. The Central Scotland MSP was due to begin with a round of meetings at VisitScotland's offices in Edinburgh.
The programme formed part of Holyrood's business exchange scheme, which began last November, to promote better understanding between MSPs and business organisations. Mr Matheson said: "I am looking forward to productive discussions with representatives of VisitScotland, Scottish Enterprise and BAA Scottish Airports. "This exchange programme will allow me a look at tourism from the inside and gain a deeper understanding of the way the sector operates." He added: "I hope I will also be able to give VisitScotland a better idea about the work the parliament does and the impact it has on tourism."
Presiding Officer Sir David Steel, who is also president of business exchange, said he was "delighted" the tourism industry had decided to join the scheme. He added: "I am very pleased that Michael is taking part in the tourism exchange programme, as this industry is one of the biggest contributors to our economy. "Strengthening the knowledge in parliament about this vital sector can only be a positive development for both sides." Business exchange is registered as an educational charity and its board is made up of MSPs, business representatives and trade unionists. |
