| Friday, 14 June, 2002, 19:13 GMT 20:13 UK Rain misery for Westlife fans The event was due to feature boy band Westlife A major pop festival which was due to feature big name acts including Westlife, Blue and the Sugababes has been cancelled because of bad weather. Organisers of Sunday's planned Irn-Bru Live and Loud festival said heavy rain has left the Bellahouston Park venue in Glasgow waterlogged. About 30,000 people were expected to attend the event, which could now be rescheduled.
Earlier in the week Westlife had reportedly considered pulling out of the festival because it clashed with the Republic of Ireland's World Cup match against Spain. They made arrangements to watch the game at the Parkhead home of Celtic Football Club before the festival. Event organisers "deeply regretted" cancelling the concert but said conditions had become "too treacherous" for it to go ahead. Extremely disappointing Staff from event producers DF Concerts said every effort had been made to secure the sight and make it suitable for wet conditions but said they had not expected such a downpour in the city. Siobhan Crampsey, head of Scottish Radio Holdings, one of the organisers, said: "This is extremely disappointing for everyone involved in the event but it is unquestionably the right decision. "We are aware that thousands of music fans will be upset but we have to put public safety before all else." Geoff Ellis, chief executive of DF Concerts, said the site was already far too wet to be ready for Sunday. Fans who have paid for tickets will have their money refunded. | See also: 12 Jun 02 | England 28 Apr 02 | Entertainment 24 Feb 02 | Entertainment 13 Feb 02 | Entertainment 05 Feb 01 | N Ireland Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
