Gordon Brown appears to have seen off his critics in the Parliamentary Labour Party for the time being.
At a packed meeting this evening - where some MPs told him to stand down - the Prime Minister acknowledged his failings and told colleagues that he would try to do better.
He was speaking after Labour's dismal showing in the European election.
However, just after the meeting, the former cabinet minister, Stephen Byers, called on Mr Brown to resign.
The BBC's Political Editor, Nick Robinson, reports.
