Prince Charles was given a guided tour around the jail |
The Prince of Wales has concluded a second day of engagements in Northern Ireland. Prince Charles spent some time behind bars in north Belfast on Thursday with a visit to Crumlin Road jail to hear of its future, now it no longer houses people held at his mother's pleasure.
A renowned architecture enthusiast, the Prince is president of the Phoenix Trust which regenerates large historic buildings.
The trust is involved in plans to revitalise the Belfast jail, and Prince Charles was given a guided tour of the now disused adjoining courthouse and empty prison.
Both are Grade A listed buildings from the Victorian era and are due for redevelopment.
Earlier, he was in Ballykelly for the World Ploughing Championships, where he took the reins of two horses and ploughed a furrow some 100 yards long.
The Prince also visited a new police station in Coleraine, where he witnessed a breathalyser unit in operation.
His final engagement was hosting a reception at Hillsborough for people from the Spirit of Enniskillen Trust, which was set up after the IRA bombing which killed 11 people in the County Fermanagh town.
