Arrests made at weekend festival

The first day of Radio 1's Big Weekend in Swindon has been a success, according to Wiltshire Police.

Radio 1's Big Weekend at Swindon's Lydiard Park began on Saturday with crowds of up to 20,000 attending.

A police spokesperson said a small number of arrests were made for drug possession, use of counterfeit currency and two assaults.

A BBC spokesperson said the town of Swindon had "embraced the event" and "everyone was having a great time".

Performers including Lily Allen, Scouting for Girls, Snow Patrol and Akon are among the weekend line-up.

Organisers say those without tickets are being asked to stay away.
