New bid for Swindon football club
Mike Diamandis
Mr Diamandis said the club wanted to stay in Swindon
A fans' consortium bidding to take over the running of Swindon Town football club has tabled a formal application to take control.

The group is backed by former QPR chairman Bill Power.

The club says it is in talks with another potential investor, and is also looking at a proposal to move its stadium near to Chippenham.

The club has recently asked its owners, the Wills family, to bail it out again financially.

When the club came out of administration in 2002, it agreed to pay 1m within five years to creditors.

The club's general manager, Mike Diamandis, told BBC Radio Wiltshire an "entrepreneur" was interested in investing in the club.

We have been approached to move to junction 17 of the M4, and it is our jobs to look at that. Our preferred route is to stay in Swindon

"We will start [talking to him] again in the New Year. He's a neighbour of Sir Seton Will's... parameters are being discussed."

He added that any potential investors would have to provide sufficient proof of funds.

A spokesman for the club's solicitors said a proposal had been received by the fans' trust.

"It does not go into any detail but it has started the ball rolling," he added.

The club has been trying to redevelop its town centre site for some time, but the proposed improvements have hit problems with Swindon Borough Council and some residents.

County Ground

The club has already had one proposed development at Shaw Community Forest turned down.

It then announced it wanted to redevelop the current site in partnership with the council, which owns the land the County Ground is built on.

Mr Diamandis said: "The council has committed themselves to helping us.

"We hope to stay at the County Ground and would love to redevelop it into a modern complex.

"But we have been approached to move to junction 17 of the M4 [near Chippenham], and it is our jobs to look at that. Our preferred route is to stay in Swindon."
