Football club faces closure order
A winding-up order has been served on Swindon Town Football Club - the second this year.

The order was made after an application by HM Revenue & Customs and follows one made in January after the club defaulted on a 600,000 VAT bill.

Mark Devlin, deputy assistant chairman, said the money would be paid by a deadline which had already been agreed.

"Money is being put in place to pay this, as was always intended, by 18 October," he said.

The club is currently working on a proposal for rebuilding the stadium.

A planned new stadium at Shaw Tip site was rejected after public opposition.

Following the January court order, the club's major shareholder, Sir Seton Wills and developer St Modwen stepped in to loan the club the money to service the debt.

A spokesman for HM Revenue & Customs said individual winding up orders were confidential.
