Swindon have been at the County Ground for more than 100 years |
Plans to explore the possibility of Swindon Town remaining at the County Ground have won cross-party support at the town's borough council. A council motion, backed by the main parties, will call on councillors to help the club examine remaining at their current home.
The club's original plans for a new ground in the west of the town fell through after residents protested.
If staying is not an option the council may help find a new home for the club.
The motion, which is also backed by supporters' group Trust STFC, will be heard at a council meeting on November 18.
'Golden opportunity'
Tony Norris, from the trust, said: "We are absolutely delighted that all parties have united to work together on the way forward for the club.
"We hope we can move forward together with the council to seize what is a golden opportunity for the club, the fans and the community of Swindon as a whole."
Conservative councillor Justin Tomlinson, who first backed the motion, said the town should look at how other communities have benefited from new football grounds.
"One only has to look at some of the fantastic results that have been achieved in other towns when the football club, fans and council work together to see that this could be a real boon for Swindon."
Bob Holt, acting chief executive of Swindon Town FC, said: "We have been at the County Ground for over 100 years and it is only appropriate that we should explore every opportunity to stay here for another 100 years."
