Sculpture park up for arts award

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is in the running for one of the country's most prestigious arts awards.

Its Underground Gallery is one of 10 attractions to have been nominated for the �100,000 Gulbenkian Prize for innovation in museums and galleries.

The �2.75m facility near Wakefield was built in 2004 and is one of the largest purpose-built galleries of its kind.

Prize organisers will announce a shortlist of four attractions in April before the winner is revealed in May.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park was founded in 1977 and over the years has received many accolades as one of the best sites in the world to see contemporary sculpture in a landscape setting.

Permanent exhibits at the 500-acre park include works by Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Antony Gormley and Elizabeth Frink.

The park's executive director, Peter Murray, said it was a great honour to be considered for the prize.

"We work very hard to promote wider public appreciation and enjoyment of art and our Underground Gallery has certainly captured the imagination, winning the support and enthusiasm of visitors and artists."
