Firefighters in West Yorkshire are taking extra security measures after suffering 45 attacks on crews in the past six months.

Latest figures reveal staff at Gipton, in Leeds, were assaulted nearly four times more than anywhere else in the county.

Gipton's total of 18 was followed by five in Bradford, with the county as a whole seeing 45 attacks between April and July this year.

Attacks range from physical assaults on firefighters to vehicles being pelted with stones, bottles and bricks as they attend 999 calls.

The areas of Gipton, Seacroft and East End Park are known to be particular hotspots in Leeds.

Sometimes the problem is simply that we are in uniform and therefore one of many symbols of authority for young people to attack
West Yorkshire Fire Service spokesman
But, while acknowledging the growing problem, not just locally but throughout the country, a spokesman for West Yorkshire Fire Service said crews had no intention of branding some areas as "no-go".

He said: "The main problem comes when stolen cars are torched and fire crews are lured into an area before being attacked.

"We have taken measures to reduce the risks for our crews such as installing CCTV cameras on the vehicles, shatter-proof windows and central locking.

"But we will continue to attend alarms even if there is the suspicion that it is a false alarm because you simply don't know when it is for real and a life is at risk."

The spokesman said that crews were actively involved in community work to foster links and build relationships with local people.

He said: "Sometimes the problem is simply that we are in uniform and therefore one of many symbols of authority for young people to attack."

He added that the brigade had no plans to request police protection when attending fires in certain areas.
