Merseyside Fire Service says violence against its firefighters is becoming more common, and wants people to report those responsible.

Although stone-throwing is a common problem, in the latest incident a firefighter was assaulted in Kirkby.

The fire service says that attacks are so frequent that they are often not reported.

There have also been attempted thefts from fire engines, while crews are dealing with emergencies.

Alex McDougall, spokesman for Merseyside Fire Service, said: "I think all of us who live in Merseyside should be ashamed that our emergency workers who are out there protecting the community, should come under attack like this.

"It's absolutely disgraceful and unfortunately people in certain areas become so used to it that they expect it to happen at certain times of the day."
