A 15-year-old boy who subjected a shop owner racist abuse has landed an anti-social behaviour order (Asbo). The youth is the first person to received an Asbo in Hendon, Sunderland after causing years of misery to Mohan Gill, of Suffolk Street.
Mr Gill and his family suffered racist taunts from the teenager who daubed graffiti on their shop and caused criminal damage.
The action was brought by Northumbria Police and Sunderland City Council.
Feel safe
The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was convicted for a racially motivated public order offence following an incident in August.
Mr Gill told police the boy regularly hurled racist abuse at him and his wife.
The youth was given a six-month supervision order and told he cannot take part in any activities which could cause alarm or distress to others.
The Asbo lasts for two years. Hendon Community Inspector, Gordon Makepeace, said: "This is a successful result working with our partners in Sunderland under our large scale Operation Gryphon.
"We will continue to tackle anti-social behaviour together to make people feel safe and we would encourage people to give us information so we can continue to target those responsible."
