The bikes are being used for greater flexibility |
Extra police officers will be patrolling their beat on bicycles to tackle youth disorder in a village. The officers will patrol Felton, in north Northumberland, following concerns from residents and the parish council about anti-social behaviour.
It has already led to alcohol being seized from four youths on the recreation ground and warning letters sent to parents.
Northumbria Police said it was more effective to use mountain bikes.
Community inspector Heather Richardson said: "We have put extra patrols into the village as a direct response to concerns from the local community.
"By using cycle patrols the officers have far greater flexibility. Unlike cars they are silent and allow officers to move around much more quickly than on foot."
Among the concerns raised were about young people hanging around, some drinking alcohol and some causing minor damage and nuisance.
Parish Council chairman Sylvia Harrison: "It's unpleasant to be honest. Felton is a really nice place to live and has got a very strong community spirit and everyone wants to keep it like that.
'Tons to do'
"I think the problem is that young people today have a degree of freedom and mobility that they have never had before and they don't know what to do with it.
"There is loads going on in this village. I'm afraid I don't accept the excuse that there is nothing for the young people to do, there is tons of stuff to do."
Among the things she highlighted were the village hall, which has its own gym, and a youth club.
She said she also believed young people were coming in from other villages.
