A bobby on a bicycle has been employed by the University of Bristol.

Pc Sarah Daniels from Redland Police Station, will patrol the campuses on a six month trial working with the university's security staff.

She will investigate university crime as well as targeting offenders who are known to frequent the area.

Pc Daniels, who has served with the Avon and Somerset force for 10 years, has spent the past two-and-a-half years as part of an undercover operation.

She said: "I am also a trained evidence gatherer for the force and hope my experience and local knowledge will benefit the university."

The new appointment has been welcomed by the university's bursar.

"This initiative should help us to reduce the fear of crime amongst our community," said Mike Phipps.
