Membership drive at football club

A Tyneside youth football club which helped launch the careers of a string of world-famous footballers is appealing for new members.

Wallsend Boys' Club in Newcastle nurtured the talents of Alan Shearer, Peter Beardsley and Michael Carrick, among others.

It was formed by the employees of Swan Hunters Shipyard in 1938.

Club leader Gary Marshall says the club helps provide support for youngsters in all aspects of their lives.

He said: "Without youngsters coming through the club wouldn't be here. We've got coaching sessions and a special three or four-a-side league on Sunday evening, which means everyone gets lots of practice.

"Though only a small proportion make it into the professional game, lots go on to play at different levels, and we encourage them, give support and help them achieve their goals, not just in football."

The club has recently secured its own grass pitches for the first time in its history, he added.

Despite its name, membership is open to girls and boys - between the ages of six and 16.
