Expansion hope for football club

A youth football club, which has produced stars such as Alan Shearer, hopes to secure its long-term future by moving into a permanent outdoor home.

Wallsend Boys' Club has encouraged the region's young talent from its base in Station Road for the past 40 years.

It is now concluding negotiations with North Tyneside Council to lease land adjacent to Wallsend Sports Centre.

This will enable the club, which also coaches girls, to raise funds and develop external facilities.

'Recognise dreams'

Club leader Garry Marshall said: "We have never had a site which we could call our own with outdoor facilities.

"This move will secure the club's future for the next 40 years and beyond.

"It will enable us to continue to work with the youth in our area to recognise their dreams whatever they may be.

"The club will also be able to increase its work within the local community and make it a focal point for local people in the area and beyond.

"It will give us an opportunity to run an adult team and enable us to increase the participation with our girls section."
