One of Newcastle's best-loved footballers has been presented with an award in recognition of his work for a children's charity. Newcastle United's Alan Shearer received an award from the NSPCC minutes before the final home game of the season kicked off on Sunday.
The award was in recognition of his contribution to the NSPCC's FULL STOP campaign to end cruelty to children.
He appeared in the TV adverts that launched the campaign in March 1999.
Welcome support
Shearer is also an active fund raiser and has provided prizes for an annual ball in the North East.
These included the boots he wore to score his 250th league goal which raised a staggering �5,500.
Dennis Clark, Community Appeals Manager based in Newcastle, said: "Alan has been a dedicated supporter of the NSPCC for many years.
"No matter how packed his schedule he has always found time to help our charity in any way he can and his support has come from the heart.
"We are proud to have Alan as our supporter and his help over the years has made a real difference."
