Domestic violence is costing the county of Suffolk about 318m a year, a new report has revealed. The figure is made up of the cost of health care, children's services, the police, the courts and personal costs such as loss of earnings.
The report to Suffolk County Council said between April 2006 and March 2007 there were 5,319 cases of domestic abuse in the county.
The council is looking at how best to support victims of domestic abuse.
The report said there is a strong tradition of voluntary support services in the county with groups such as Ipswich and Waveney Women's Aid and St Edmundsbury Women's Centre providing help.
It said the council has its own domestic violence and abuse project manager and a dedicated website and helpline.
