NHS chiefs in Stoke-on-Trent hope to improve the health of youngsters in the city by opening an academy school. Graham Urwin, the chief executive of Stoke-on-Trent Primary Care Trust (PCT), said he hoped it would encourage more children to work in the NHS. He said that, unlike other sponsored academies, instead of putting cash into the scheme, they would contribute their health expertise. The plans are currently being discussed with education leaders in the city. No site has been chosen so far. Mr Urwin said he hoped all youngsters would also be made to do work experience in the NHS. 'Very exciting' He said that if the emphasis on more healthy living worked in one school it could be rolled out to others across the city. Although no cash could be put towards the project with NHS funds, Mr Urwin said extra money could come from organisations like the Learning and Skills Council. He said experts from the NHS could help with lessons and encourage youngsters to eat more healthily and take more exercise. Mr Urwin said: "I am very keen on the idea of working closely with my partners in the city to improve the life expectancy of the people of Stoke-on-Trent. "Starting with our children, who are the adults of the future, is a very exciting thing to do."
