Stoke-on-Trent will be the centre of a major study into the causes and effects of obesity. Places like fast food outlets, parks, and recreational facilities will be mapped out and their influence on the numbers of overweight people nearby.
Researchers from Staffordshire University have been given 300,000 to carry out the study.
They say the high levels of deprivation and obesity in Stoke-on-Trent make it it an ideal city for the study.
The data will be used to calculate how easy it to be physically active in each area and determine if that has any impact on the levels of obesity.
It is hoped the information will help town planners to better encourage fitness.
