Trains still use the line through Tamworth while it is widened |
One of the Midlands' worst railway bottlenecks is being widened with a 350m scheme in south Staffordshire. The aim of one of the biggest rail engineering projects in England is to relieve congestion on the West Coast Main Line (WCML).
One stretch through Tamworth only had two tracks ahead of this work, but this will be doubled within two years.
It also means 37 bridges need widening and the removal of one of the WCML's few remaining level crossings.
The work should mean more reliable services from the North Midlands and the North West heading to and from Warwickshire and London.
The work is leading to delays and congestion for motorists in Tamworth while the Trent Valley Four Tracking project is carried out.
Tamworth and neighbouring towns have a limited Virgin Trains service to London.
This will be supplemented by a new hourly London to Crewe Silverlink service from 2008 making stops at smaller towns.
