Work to improve the railway will cause disruption in a Staffordshire town, rail bosses are warning. Network Rail said it is making progress on its Trent Valley Four Tracking (TV4) project to double the number of tracks through Tamworth.
It will include new bridges and traffic management to make sure motorists, other traffic and pedestrians can continue to travel across the railway.
It is part of the upgrade to the West Coast Main Line to allow 125mph trains.
Work starts this week next to the track in the Anders and Alders areas.
Site hoardings are going up and test soil nails - to stabilise the tracks - will be put in the sides of the track cuttings.
Most of the earth will be moved away by trains to minimise the amount of traffic using roads.
Keith Riley, TV4 senior programme manager for the project, said: "This project will deliver a major improvement to the railway through Tamworth but necessitates some intensive work in the community."
The Upper Gungate bridge will be demolished and replaced, and there will be work to move a public footpath at the side of Wiggington Park starting this month.
The �8bn modernisation project, allowing tilting trains from London to the Midlands the north and Glasgow, is scheduled for completion in 2009.
