Two rail stations 'could close'
Two rural rail stations may be closed and a local stopping service could be axed, the BBC has learned.

Councils are being asked for their views on a Strategic Rail Authority (SRA) plan to close stations at Norton Bridge, Staffs, and Polesworth, Warks.

Both stations need new footbridges and have "few" customers. The SRA says the funds could be better spent elsewhere.

The body is also considering replacing a local stopping service between Stafford and Stoke with buses.

Last year the SRA announced the suspension of three local stopping services between Stoke and Stafford, Coventry and Nuneaton, and Stafford and Nuneaton. Instead, buses were used to carry passengers.

Now the authority has announced it would prefer that Stoke-to-Stafford remained as a bus service.

Elsewhere, local services between Stafford and Nuneaton will return but are likely to be drastically reduced.

The service between Coventry and Nuneaton is likely to return in June, the SRA says.

Councillors in Staffordshire have been sent details of the initial proposals.
