Midlands Expressway said it had spent about 900m on the road |
The cost of using the M6 Toll road has risen for the second time. From Tuesday, the cost of using the 25-mile route will rise by 50p for car drivers and by 1 for HGVs.
The price rise will mean cars pay a day rate of 3.50 and vans and HGVs pay 7. The night rate will continue to be 1 cheaper than the day rate.
The Freight Transport Association claims the increase will cost companies an extra 500 a year for every HGV that uses the road.
'Deter drivers'
The association claims the increase is "unnecessary and counter-productive".
A spokesman for the National Alliance Against Tolls said: "The toll increase will deter drivers from using the road.
"This will send a clear message to Alistair Darling of what drivers think of the idea of tolls on all Britain's roads."
Midlands Expressway Limited introduced standard rates in August 2004 after an introductory period of discounted travel.
The company claims this is the first real increase in prices since the road opened in December 2003.
Tom Fanning, from Midlands Expressway, said the rise was justified.
"Let's not forget that we have spent more than 900m on delivering this road... with no drain on taxpayers' money.
"I believe the lorries that have used the road in the past will continue to use the road."
The UK's only toll motorway links junction four of the M6 at Coleshill, Warwickshire, with junction 11 near Cannock, Staffordshire.
