Year-on-year rise in toll users
Toll gates at the M6 Toll
Opponents of the M6 Toll say it is not a success
The number of vehicles using the M6 Toll in January rose by 25% on the same month in 2004, the latest figures show.

According to operator Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL) the average daily traffic on the UK's only toll motorway totalled 43,344, compared to 32,763.

It is the first time figures have been compared between corresponding months.

Despite this, anti-toll campaigners say the number of vehicles using the road has fallen consecutively over the last six months.

A spokesman for the National Alliance Against Tolls said 24% fewer vehicles had used the road in January 2005 compared to July last year, and said most drivers were avoiding the 27-mile route.

The M6 Toll, which opened in December 2003, links junction four of the existing M6 at Coleshill, Warwickshire, with junction 11 near Cannock, Staffordshire.
