Park and ride scheme scaled down

Plans for a controversial park and ride scheme have been scaled down.

Brighton council had been looking at sites at Patcham Court Farm and Braypool for the scheme, accommodating between 900 and 1,500 vehicles.

Officers have now recommended the Patcham Court Farm site for approval, but the scheme would offer 450 spaces.

"We have listened to those who would be affected," councillor Ken Bodfish said. Last month, a 5,000-name petition against the plans was handed in.

'Realistic choices'

Mr Bodfish said: "The two schemes have been assessed in immense detail.

"The result is a park and ride scheme that is truly deliverable."

And he said the proposal would enable economic growth in the city, and provide environmental benefits.

The council has said park and ride is a key part of the city's plan to reduce congestion and pollution.

The city's park and ride scheme is being developed alongside a rapid transport system and other schemes to provide "realistic travel choices for businesses and visitors", the council said.
