The allotments would make way for a 900 space car park |
People living near Brighton claim parts of the Sussex Downs are under threat because of plans to build a Park and Ride facility for the city. Traffic levels in the city are so high that Brighton and Hove Council wants a large car park near Patcham to help reduce congestion.
The plans would involve several homes being demolished as well as farm land and allotments being ripped up.
A council spokesman said the allotments would be replaced nearby.
But Granville Wilcock, who lives in Patcham, spends a large amount of time tending his allotment since he retired and said his way of life would be ruined.
He said: "This is my life and my wife's. This is where we like to be everyday, doing this.
Mr Wilcock says his allotment is his life and does not want to move |
"My grandchildren and my daughter are fed from here."
Councillor Gill Mitchell said the council was working alongside the tenants affected.
"We are committed to replacing the allotments and providing high quality allotments in the vicinity."
Brighton and Hove Council is aiming to reduce traffic levels in the city by 10-20%.
A decision on the Park and Ride plans will be made in September.
