Peer seeks inquiry into A23 crash
wrecked cars and rescue teams
Five of the victims were travelling in the same black BMW
A public inquiry into a fatal crash near Brighton in which eight people were killed has been called for.

Lord Berkeley raised the issue in the House of Lords, asking whether the government would be investigating the accident, which happened on 16 May.

The Labour peer, who is president of the Road Danger Reduction Forum, was told it was too early for a decision on whether an inquiry would be held.

Police investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.

Single survivor

The accident occurred when a BMW crossed the central reservation of the A23 into the path of an oncoming Land Rover Freelander.

Five of the victims were travelling in the BMW - they were named as Aaron Sharpe, 20, Mitch Treliving, 19, Katherine Sharpe, 18, Danielle Billingham 17, and Gemma Smoker, 17, all from the Crawley area.

The other victims were Kate and Toby Beasley, both 30, from Godalming in Surrey, and toddler Marcus Mohabir, who were in the Land Rover Freelander.

The only survivor, Stephen Mohabir, suffered a fractured leg.
