Top scores for county NHS trusts

The review is carried out by the Care Quality Commission

NHS trusts in South Yorkshire have been ranked some of the best in the country in the annual healthcare ratings.

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust scored "excellent" for both its quality and use of resources as did Doncaster and South Humber Mental Health Trust.

Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was also marked "excellent" for services.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) rates all trusts in England as either excellent, good or fair.

It is the second year running that both the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust and Doncaster and South Humber Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH) have earned double scores of excellent.

Staff credit

They are just two of three in the Yorkshire and Humber region to achieve such ratings.

Christine Boswell, chief executive at RDaSH, said the result was a credit to staff, "each of whom contributed to today's result by ensuring consistently that patients, service users and carers were at the heart of the work they all did."

Elsewhere in the region, Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust scored "good" for its services and "excellent" for its use of resources as did Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

It is the fourth year the CQC has carried out its annual assessment of the NHS.

The review is based on the trusts' performance between 1 April 2008 and 31 March 2009.
