Council leader Jan Wilson said it was in talks with the government with the hope of recovering as much of the money as possible.

Survey visits to 2,000 homes in the city revealed 1,273 had been affected by the flooding on 25 June.

The �30m figure includes about �20m needed for repairing damaged roads and �3m for housing.

A joint statement with council chief executive Sir Bob Kerslake said: "We are working with the government to recover as much of this money as we can both through schemes already announced and by making other approaches too."

The flooding in Sheffield claimed two lives. Ryan Parry, 14, died after being swept away when the swollen River Sheaf burst its banks.

And Peter Harding, 68, from Burngreave, died in hospital after getting into difficulty in flood water in the Wicker area of the city.

RAF helicopters were used to lift stranded office workers from buildings in the Lower Don Valley and Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough football stadium and the giant Meadowhall shopping centre were pictured swamped under several feet of water.
