Mr Winter is "very pleased" at the Crown Prosecution Service's decision |
Inquiries into alleged irregularities over the Mayor of Doncaster's election expenses have been dropped. Police had been investigating claims that Martin Winter should have included a meeting at Doncaster Rovers ground in May 2005 in his election returns.
But the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said it had decided not to take any further action on the matter.
Mr Winter said he was very pleased with the decision and would continue to work on the regeneration of the borough.
Smear campaign
Police had been looking at whether the meeting, which was paid for by the club during the election period last May, had been an undeclared election expense after the club's chairman, John Ryan, told fans to vote for guest speaker Mr Winter.
At the time, officers were already looking at the way the Glass Park community project, once run by Mr Winter, was set up after being criticised by a government watchdog.
Mr Winter has also faced allegations concerning the level of his involvement in a recent planning application in Hatfield.
Speaking at this year's election count in Doncaster, Mr Winter described politics as a dirty game and said the allegations were part of a political smear campaign.
