Police crackdown on rowdy youths
Police arrest a youth
It is hoped the orders will make the city centre nicer to live in
Gangs of youths who intimidate residents in Sheffield can be moved on by the police from Friday.

The Moor, Dixon Lane and Devonshire Green areas of the city have been designated "dispersal zones" by the city council and police.

It means officers can ask groups of two or more people to leave an area if they are acting anti-socially.

The dispersal orders have been granted due to an increase in alcohol-related crime in the area, police said.

'Genuine change'

Councillor Jackie Drayton said: "We are aiming to ensure the city centre remains a safe place to live, work and visit.

"We will ensure that the Devonshire Green order does not stop people meeting and enjoying this space in an appropriate way."

Insp Shaun Morley of South Yorkshire Police said: "This is just one way that we can address the concerns of people who live in the city centre.

"Tackling these issues effectively is about more than just looking for short-term solutions - we're aiming for a genuine change in the way people behave around these areas of the city.

"In time, that change will create a better environment for everyone to use and the dispersal orders will have played their part."
