Football star denies rape attempt
Junior Agogo
The player stayed at the hotel with team-mates
A footballer has told a court he kissed and fondled a 16-year-old waitress but denied attempting to rape her.

Bristol Rovers striker Junior Agogo said the girl returned to his Doncaster hotel room after delivering a room-service order and the pair talked.

He said they kissed, before she left his room saying she would return and he told the jury at Sheffield Crown Court that was the last he saw of her.

Mr Agogo, 25, of St David's Mews, Bristol, denies attempted rape.

Mr Agogo had been staying with his team at the hotel before a match in May 2004.
We had a bit of a talk... We kissed afterwards

The teenager delivered an order to his room and agreed to go back later, he said.

When she returned his room-mate was in the bedroom watching a movie so she and Mr Agogo went into the bathroom.

"We had a bit of a talk. I asked her how long she had worked there and if she enjoyed working there.

"We kissed afterwards. We fondled each other for a bit," he said.

The girl then said she would have to leave because her manager would be looking for her.

'Kissing and fondling'

Mr Agogo told the jury he asked her if she would come back later, she said yes and then she left.

Sarah Wright, prosecuting, suggested to Mr Agogo that he had more than kissing and fondling in mind when he took the waitress into the bathroom.

She said: "You intended some sort of sexual encounter, didn't you?"

He replied: "No".

The prosecutor continued: "You've spotted her as attractive and were going to try your luck."

Returned to room

He said: "No".

Mr Agogo told the court the team had eaten in the hotel restaurant early and he and Mr Thorpe had returned to their room.

He said he decided to order a soft drink from room service which is when the incident began.

Earlier, the waitress, now 17, told the court she had been dragged into the room after stopping outside and Mr Agogo had tried to have sex with her.
