Club unveils stadium hotel plans

Sheffield United have unveiled plans for Bramall Lane's new corner stand and four-star hotel complex.

A planning application has already been submitted for the development, which officials hope will boost the club's long-term financial viability.

The stand, which will sit in front of the 146-bedroom hotel, will boost the stadium's capacity by 2,200.

But any hotel guests hoping to watch a free game will be disappointed - none of the bedrooms overlook the pitch.

A spokesman said this was to stop the pitch being viewed from any area that is not covered by the Safety at Sports Ground Act.

The picture of the stand really brings home what an improvement to the ground the development will make

The 10-storey hotel has been designed to integrate with the proposed entertainment complex and casino at Bramall Lane.

The club said it was in talks with a number of potential hotel operators.

Finance director Mark Fenoughty described the complex as an exciting project for Sheffield United and the city.

"The picture of the stand really brings home what an improvement to the ground the development will make," he said.

"It will provide a boost to the club's long-term financial viability and the Sheffield city region's hotel offering will be enhanced by a modern and contemporary four-star venue."

Members of Sheffield City Council's planning committee are expected to discuss the application in September.
