Club ups the stakes in casino bid
Casino in Las Vegas
Las Vegas Sands is a major casino operator in the US
Sheffield United has upped the stakes in its bid to build a casino at its Bramall Lane ground.

Plans for the joint venture with Las Vegas Sands Inc were unveiled in August and a detailed planning application has now been submitted by the club.

The South Stand would be rebuilt to incorporate a 120 bedroom hotel, food and drink outlets and the casino and could create more than 1,300 jobs.

Proposals to relax the laws on gambling are currently before parliament.

Timing 'more certain'

It is claimed that "Sheffield Sands" would also create 300 jobs during its construction and help regenerate the Sharrow and Heeley areas.

Kevin McCabe, the chairman of Sheffield United, said: "The timing and impact of the liberalisation of the UK gaming laws is now more certain.

"This is a significant opportunity for Sheffield United and the city of Sheffield."

Mr McCabe went on to say that the club has received more than 500 letters of support for its proposals.
