Support for city 'super casino'

South African and US companies are interested in setting up in Sheffield
Business leaders in Sheffield say it is important a new large casino is built in the city.

Sheffield Chamber of Commerce said a casino would pull money into the area and create as many as 1,000 jobs.

The government has announced it will allow just eight "super casinos" to be built rather than up to 40 as originally planned.

Four consortiums have already announced plans to build large casinos at sites in Sheffield.

Successful proposal

They are at Meadowhall, Don Valley Stadium, Bramall Lane football ground and Owlerton Stadium.

Nigel Tomlinson, the chamber's chief executive, said: "We do want to see a casino here in Sheffield and we do want one of the proposals to be successful.

"We don't have any preference over which one we think would be best for the city.

"But we believe that the revenue and jobs the casino would bring to Sheffield is something worth championing."
