New plans for the site would see costs rise |
Plans to increase the size of a planned sports stadium in Doncaster have been backed by people in the borough. The stadium, which will be the new home for Doncaster Rovers, was originally planned to have 10,000 seats and forecast to cost 20m.
Almost 99% of the 3,322 people who took part in a public consultation agreed with plans to increase capacity to 15,000 and include more facilities.
Councillors will decide whether to build a larger stadium next month.
Land sales
Mayor Martin Winter said he was "overwhelmed" by the response of the public who voiced their opinion through a dedicated phone line and website.
"This is a huge statement of support for what will be a prestigious sporting venue coupled with entertainment and educational facilities," he added.
Doncaster Council approved funding for the original plans for the Lakeside Sports Complex in November 2003.
Mayor Winter said the additional funding needed for the revised development could be met through land sales.
It is not yet known how much the larger development would cost.
The Doncaster Rovers and Doncaster Belles soccer teams and the Doncaster Dragons rugby league side will all share the new stadium which it is hoped will open in 2006.
