Plans to evict Gypsies from land in a Somerset village have been put on hold. Taunton Deane Borough Council had this week planned to apply for a court injunction to remove the 16 families from the site in North Curry.
The Gypsies had started to build homes on the site without obtaining planning permission for them.
On Tuesday, the council said it had delayed its injunction plans because there were "still human rights issues to be considered".
It said it had made the decision after seeking advice from a barrister.
"It is essential that the council follows all the correct legal guidelines so as not to hinder any future course of action," the authority said.
A spokeswoman said it was not yet known when the council would now apply for an injunction.
Action was taken against the Gypsies after they started installing septic tanks and bringing in stone to build makeshift roads.
The group owns the five-acre site in Oxen Lane but does not have planning permission for any new developments.
The council issued the families with a notice on 29 October that they must stop building work.
The group was also told it must restore the land to its former agricultural use.
