Derelict tannery buildings listed
Morlands
The site boasts a century of industrial architecture
Two 19th Century buildings on the site of a disused tannery in Somerset are to be listed.

The former Baily's Skin and Rug Factory and the Baily's Glove Factory at Morlands in Glastonbury will now be preserved as part of the redevelopment of the 31-acre site.

Unlike the more usual urban tanneries, Morlands and Baily's were built on a large, open site where new facilities could be built without having to knock down earlier buildings.

This means the site contains buildings representing changing tannery technology over a 100-year period.

Gordon Woodend, Head of Operations for the Regional Development Agency's (RDA) Somerset Team, said: "I'm delighted these tannery buildings are to be safeguarded as an important piece of Glastonbury's heritage."

'Tourist tapestry'

Peter Chapman from English Heritage said the Baily buildings had been selected as they are better preserved and "excellent examples of buildings constructed in England's tannery heyday".

Alan Gloak, Mayor of Glastonbury, said: "I welcome the news that these two important buildings are to be listed and I would hope that their rich history in the tannery trade will be recognised so that we can incorporate that heritage as part of the tourist tapestry of the town."

The South West RDA, which owns the Morlands site, is working in partnership with Mendip District Council, businesses and the local community to redevelop it.

It will be turned into a mixed-use sustainable development containing industrial and commercial space as well as social, community, recreational and tourism facilities.
