The �40m transformation of a Cornish town has moved a step closer with the news that permission to demolish a number of buildings has been applied for.

The demolition is part of the preparation for the multi-million redevelopment of St Austell town centre.

The South West Regional Development Agency's (RDA) application has been submitted to Restormel Borough Council.

The RDA has already drawn up a shortlist of contractors and is putting the work out to tender.

The hope is work can start at the site by late March or early April, depending on when planning permission is granted and the relocation of existing tenants.

The demolitions will be phased to minimise disruption to the town centre.

"We won't be pulling all the buildings down at the same time," said Jim Price of the RDA.

"The demolitions have to be phased to keep disruption to a minimum and the whole process will take around 20 weeks."

"These will be mechanical demolitions, level by level, so there won't be any wrecking balls or explosions as they come down," he said.

The RDA-owned buildings will make way for a multi-million pound development designed by award-winning Edward Cullinan Architects.

The new scheme includes proposals for a large, tiered grass roof to reflect St Austell's setting amid the surrounding hills, two new piazzas, shops, pubs, restaurants, apartments, a cinema and office space.

The scheme is a partnership between the RDA, Restormel Borough Council and private sector developer David McLean Developments.
