Several roads are closed in the county

The river is at a height of about 4.6m and more defences have been erected in the town - at the Gateway Centre.

The surge in the river will now move to Ironbridge and peak on Tuesday morning at about 6.1m.

A woman was rescued from her car after spending the night in the vehicle when it was swept away by a flooded stream.

She travelled downstream for 75yds (68.5m) after attempting to cross the water in Bind Lane near Bridgnorth on Sunday evening.

Bind Lane in Billingsley is one of many roads which have been closed in Shropshire.

Flood defences are in place at Frankwell and Coleham Head in Shrewsbury and at The Wharfage in Ironbridge.

Three car parks in Shrewsbury are closed as are many Shropshire roads.

Flooding has caused the closure of Shrewsbury's Frankwell, St Julian's Friars and Raven Meadows car parks.

But Environment Agency spokesman David Throupe said he did not anticipate conditions to worsen unless there was a sudden change in the weather and more rain fell.

Trains disrupted

The bus station is still open but car parks manager Sandy Harper said that may change later.

A number of bus routes were also disrupted and a spokesman for service provider, Arriva, said they were doing their best to minimise disruption to passengers.

Train services are disrupted between Shrewsbury and Machynlleth.

The River Severn from Buildwas to Coalport was predicted to peak on Monday evening.

Flood warnings remain in place for the rest of the River Severn through Shropshire.
