Oswestry's Cambrian Visitor Centre is to close
An award-winning Shropshire tourist attraction is to close with the loss of ten jobs.

The Cambrian Visitor Centre and Porter's Restaurant in Oswestry has been run by the Oswestry Borderland Tourism (OBT) group.

The centre which was renovated at a cost of 2.1m, opened in June 2006.

The Leader of Oswestry Borough Council, David Lloyd, said he was "bitterly disappointed" at the decision which would be discussed by councillors.

Mr Lloyd said the operation at the visitor centre had hit the financial buffers at the very time that progress was being made on re-opening the railway line in the not too distant future.

"I'm bitterly disappointed at the loss of a valuable, if under-used, shop window for tourism.

"Some serious questions need to be asked if the Cambrian Visitor Centre doesn't fulfil its role as the focus for the promotion of tourism," he said.

The visitor centre building is owned by the borough council and the restoration was funded by the Market Towns Initiative, Advantage West Midlands and EC funding.
